Magic Reindeer Food Recipe

 

This magic reindeer food idea is one of the best Christmas activities of all. I wish they had this when I was a kid. Santa always gets milk and cookies, right? Well, how about Rudolph and the other reindeer, they work just as hard or harder. So, why not make reindeer snacks to give them a boost of energy along the way?

I've done this in my classes and the kids love it. It's also a great family activity to get into the magical feeling of  Christmas. I've seen various recipes on line, some of them call for mixing in craft glitter Please don't use glitter, as it's not environmentally friendly, and will give the reindeer or other animals tummy aches. Use red and green sugar crystals, instead.

Also, it can be a bit of a science lesson. Teach the kids that reindeer need salt just like cows need a salt lick, so include that in the recipe. I've seen fancy store bought versions of this craft, but that's silly. Where's the fun in that? You should make it yourself. Here's one recipe from me, but you can adapt it. You can use an old baby food jar or a plastic bag. There's also a poem to go along with it and printable labels.

Magic Reindeer Snacks Recipe:

• oats, dried oatmeal
• red and green sugar crystals
• salt
• jolly laughter(the most important, that's the magic part)

Directions:

1. You can just mix everything up and put it in the jar, but I think it looks better to layer each ingredient. The last ingredient is a good dose of jolly laughter to energize it all. Seal the jar and tie a ribbon. You could include this label and say the poem to go with it.:

"Sprinkle on the lawn at night,
The moon will make it sparkle bright,
As Santa's reindeer fly and roam,
This will bring them to your home."
This craft should be prepared at least a week or more before Christmas.

2. On Christmas eve, set out the reindeer snacks. Some people just throw everything on the lawn, but I think it's better for the reindeer if you put most of it in a dish, just like feeding your dog. And don't make the mistake of putting it by the fireplace with Santa's cookies, or you'll have reindeer trampling all over your house.

Easy Reindeer Christmas Card Craft for Preschool

Here's a really simple Reindeer Christmas card craft idea from a Japanese site, perfect for preschoolers. This card is also good for teaching about shapes.

Materials:

• brown construction paper or origami paper
• scissors
• google eyes
• red pom pom (not shown)
• glue
• crayon

Directions:

1. Cut a 6 inch square from brown construction paper. This is standard origami paper size.
2. Trace and cut little antlers from paper.
3. Fold your square in half diagonally to make a triangle.
4. Glue the antlers on the back as shown.
5. Glue google eyes and a red pom pom nose on the front. The nose on this one came off.
6. Write a holiday message on the inside with crayon.

Here's a cute craft idea on etsy. These peanut reindeer Christmas ornaments make an adorable addition to the Christmas tree.

Materials:

• unsalted roasted peanuts
• map push pins
• fine tipped black marker
• tan, brown  pipe cleaners
• thin wire or other stiff material
• sharp boring tool
• tiny screws with loops
• baker's twine or ribbon
• glue gun

Directions:

1. Carefully insert a map pin into the end the end for a nose, secure with a dab of glue.
2. Dot 2 eyes with a fine tipped marker.
3. Bore tiny holes on either side and insert tan pipe cleaner for ears.
4. Make tiny antlers from wire, or cut from card stock or other thick material. Glue or insert on top.
5. Screw a tiny loop into the top and hang up with baker's twine or ribbon.

Christmas Reindeer Hand Print Craft

 

Here are two versions of how to turn a hand print into a reindeer for Christmas. In one, you use paint. In the other, you cut out the prints. Both are incredibly cute and memorable.

Materials:

Version 1

• White construction paper
• brown paint
• 2 google eyes
• short length of Christmas ribbon or tape
• red circle for the nose
• brown pipe cleaner pieces for antlers
• glue

Directions:

1. Brush the child's hand with brown paint and press onto the paper. The thumb should be spaced out farther.
2. Glue on the eyes, nose, ribbon for a collar, and antlers.

version 2

1. Use  brown paper instead of paint. Trace and cut out the hand print and glue to the paper.
2. Other steps are the same as above. You can also add little black pieces for the hooves.

Christmas Reindeer Footprint Craft

I just love this idea of making his or her reindeer from foot prints. It's soo cute.

Materials:

• white paper
• brow paint and brushes
• towels
• google eyes or eye stickers
• small red circles for noses
• black or dark brown marker to draw antlers

Directions:

1. Brush child's feet with brown paint. They'll either laugh or cry.
2. Press feet firmly on the white paper. Allow to dry.
3. Add eyes, nose, and draw antlers. Girl reindeer should have long lashes.

You could also use pipe cleaners or yarn for the antlers, too.
